What to do if you've put the wrong fuel in your car?

How far can you drive once petrol and diesel have been mixed by mistake?

 

Normally the first problem will be some form of shuttering, misfiring or it will start shaking before it completely turns off, some people notice smoke coming from the exhaust when they try to turn it back on and that's normally when they thinking of the fuel they filled up with. Different cars will be able to drive variable distances before this occurs, but on most occasions, the simple answer is you won't get very far at all. Don't drive with petrol mixed into diesel.

Will petrol float on diesel?

The petrol will somewhat float for a short period before it disperses throughout the tank with the diesel, that's why most vehicles will break down fairly quick. It does not separate once that has occurred. However our roadside service can still get you going again.

How much wrong fuel in car is safe to drive with?

Don't drive if you have put petrol and diesel together in a car.

That way you can avoid damage and breaking down.

Will a small amount of petrol affect a diesel engine?

If a small amount of petrol is added to diesel, there are a number of factors that increase the risk of damaging the engine, including the type of vehicle, and level of wear the engine components have previously been through, as well as how much your car can handle, our advice is to always shut the engine down as soon as you realise that the incorrect fuel is running through your ute, truck, van or any car to avoid making an expensive mistake, by causing unnecessary damage.

What should I do If I accidentally put diesel in a petrol vehicle?

Regardless, of adding the wrong fuel to your car, ute, van, truck, bus or anything it's not designed for, pull over as soon as you realise and turn off the engine, if it's a little bit of the wrong fuel, then you may experience minor problems, the more contamination in the fuel tank, the more problems you will have with the vehicle.
